Florida is Zika Free - but double check before you travel out of the US

There is no current local transmission of Zika virus in the continental United States.

As of the end of 2022, no countries are experiencing active Zika outbreaks — still, the virus has not been eradicated, and there is at present no vaccine. 

In an article published by the Clevelend Clinic,  Ob/Gyn Oluwatosin Goje, MD, who specializes in infectious diseases, is quoted as saying “Zika is not an epidemic in the U.S., but in other parts of the world, the Zika virus still looms".

In the article, Dr. Goje notes that one of the main reasons for not traveling to areas at risk of Zika is that it is known to cause serious birth defects including brain damage and microcephaly a condition that, for parents infected with the virus,  can cause a baby to be born with a smaller head.

To learn whether there’s a risk of Zika in your travel destination, you can check the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) interactive Zika map, which lists threat levels by country.

Couples traveling to a Zika destination should avoid trying for pregnancy while abroad.  There is a risk of ZIKV in Mexico.  Pregnant women should consider avoiding travel to this country until after the pregnancy.  They should maintain avoidance for the first three months after they've returned is also recommended. This can be accomplished by abstaining from sex altogether or using contraception, such as birth control or condoms. Prevention and awareness are the best defences against Zika infection.
